Thomas Vermeulen, hailing from the Southern Free State, received his art training mostly from the University of Natal from which he now holds a Master’s Degree.
He taught art at Linpark High School where he established an Art Department. After this he lectured art at the Durban Teacher’s College which was followed by heading the Art Department and being senior lecturer in ceramics at the University of Technology in Bloemfontein in the Free State.
At the moment he concentrates on ceramics, painting, photography, fabric design and writing and illustrating children’s books. His most recent exhibitions have been at the Jack Heath Gallery at the University of kwaZulu Natal and the Artisan Gallery in Durban.
His work mirrors the endless beauty of God’s creation which he started to experience as a small boy on the farm and which abounds where he is staying in Pietermaritzburg. His approach is strongly decorative, his credo is to produce work that will inspire and uplift in a time characterised by tension and stress.
