Opening in 1991 the “Potters Studio” began based on the British and American idea of people coming and painting slip cast pieces in a studio environment.
Initially having only women artists painting the ceramics, such as the well known Tiffany Wallace, things began to change after a young trainee artist, Theo Ntunwana, joined the team. This shift seemed to hit a chord in the work produced and with orders increasing the business slowly grew. The team increased to a dedicated team of nine Xhosa and coloured artists and support staff that became the backbone of the workshop.
The works themselves are completely unique with a sophisticated African aesthetic.
