Artist Profile: Nicholas Jaji

Nicholas Jaji is an African contemporary artist based in Durban, South Africa. He makes use of wild seed beads, commonly known as Zulu teething beads or Job’s Tears (botanic name: Coix lachryma-jobi) which he combines with recycled wire and steel wire to create appealing functional pieces with superb craftsmanship.

Although the forms and designs are often drawn from traditional works, his interpretation is unique and the artifacts are suitable for any space, be it in the home, the office or in a public area.

Every piece starts with a wire frame shape and in this case (like artists who paint) the frame becomes the canvas and determines the design, pattern or inspiration to work on.
